Why The World Does Need Superman

Why The World Does Need Superman

By Garrett Godwin

In last summer's Superman Returns, Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) wrote an essay titled "Why the World Doesn't Need Superman", which won her a Pulitzer Prize.  Her reason?

"The world doesn't need a savior," she responds.

Though he is a comic book character, the Man of Steel has become much more than that.  For decades, he's been a cultural icon and a champion for humanity.  The ultimate good guy, a hero... indeed, the image of "super" hero.

Superman has a strong belief in what is right and wrong, willing to do the right thing in the end.  Though believed to have a black-and-white view of the world, he is what you might call an idealist.  Superman retains a strong faith in humanity as he continues to look for the good in all people.

Everything that made Superman who he is today came from his adoptive Earth parents-- Martha and Jonathan Kent, who gave him his sense of humanity.  They also passed on to their Kryptonian son good morals, teaching him about humility as well, making sure that he stays grounded and firm.  Martha and Jonathan know that Clark is special, but help him learn to use his powers for good, knowing that their son is on Earth for a reason.

Why the World does need Superman?

"I hear everything," states the Man of Steel to Lois Lane in Superman Returns.  "You wrote that the world doesn't need a savior, but every day I hear people crying for one."

We need Superman because he is there to help in anyway he can when needed.  He isn't out to right every wrong, nor believes that the ends justifies the means.  Superman knows that the war between good and evil is never-ending, but he continues to fight because he has the heart and soul for justice as he tries to look for the positive in every situation. Though the world continues to change, Superman has never changed; he continues to bring inspiration and hope to all of us.  Not only does he stand for truth, justice, and the American Way, but he also continues to serve both the common and greater good.  He makes us believe that one person can make a difference -- and so can we.

THAT'S why the World DOES need Superman.
