Judyth Piazza chats with Mark Hall, Apollocon

By Judyth Piazza CEO (Editor)

ApolloCon is Houston`s science fiction, fantasy and horror con. It is organized by a standing committee of Friends of Fandom, a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation. Friends of Fandom, which also does business as Houston Science Fiction Association (HSFA), has been active in Houston for over 20 years.

ApolloCon is an event where members of Houston`s diverse population of fans can gather under one roof to meet one another and experience the rich variety of science fiction, fantasy and horror fandom. Members of the ApolloCon Committee are typically active in one or more local fan groups, and we draw on these groups for programming ideas, guests and volunteers.

ApolloCon presents programming on literary, media, science, and fan culture topics; filk; networking opportunities for clubs and individual fans; art exhibits; a judged masquerade; gaming; LARP (live action role playing); and sales of books, art and other items related to the genres.

Programming also typically includes items that may not be specifically genre-related, but are of interest to fans. Chocolate tastings and Scotch tastings are both planned for 2007. Since ApolloCon is based in Houston, Texas "Space City "several programming items each year focus on the space program and astronomy.

Guests are typically writers and editors, artists, scientists, musicians, actors and fans in the fields of science fiction, fantasy and horror. Our Guests of Honor have been Selina Rosen (2004), Robert J. Sawyer (2005), and Peter S. Beagle (2006). Our 2007 Guest of Honor is C. S. Friedman.
