Family Affair Actress Kathy Garver in New Chicken Soup Audio Book
Award-winning actress Kathy Garver, best known for playing the teenage sister Cissy on the classic CBS series Family Affair, will provide the female voice for the audio book version of Chicken Soup for the Soul: A Book of Miracles." The audio book is scheduled for release on October 12, a month after the hard-copy edition lands in bookstores.
Like previous books in the popular "Chicken Soup" series, authors/editors Jack Canfeld, Mark Victor Hansen and LeAnn Thieman have gathered dozens of extraordinary stories from ordinary people. A Book of Miracles " is described as 101 true stories of healing, divine intervention, and answered prayers "that prove that God is alive and very active in the world today, working miracles on our behalf. "
We have used Kathy on other projects, and we especially like the sweet, honest character of her voice for this one, because it`s faith-based, " said Laura Grafton, studio casting director for Brilliance Audio, the largest independent producer of audio books in the United States.
As a long-time fan of the "Chicken Soup" series, Garver jumped at the opportunity to narrate A Book of Miracles."
The stories are soul-stirring and inspiring, and it was a joy to be able to put my own interpretation into them," she said. I absolutely believe in miracles. I have seen them in my own life."
One such miracle made the difference between life and almost certain death. Garver recalls when her house caught on fire a few years ago, while she was at home alone. She heard a noise in the garage, which she initially dismissed as her son returning home and retrieving his skateboard.
At the same time, I saw something that looked like a wave of color in the bushes outside; that`s the only way I can describe it," she said. For some reason, it caused me to get up and walk through my kitchen, and open the garage door. I was horrified to see a raging fire. I called 911 and ran outside in my pajamas and bare feet. The fire completely burned the roof off the house. If I had stayed inside a little longer, I would not have been able to escape. To this day, I cannot explain why that mysterious color in the bushes made me walk to the garage."
Garver, who makes her home in the San Francisco Bay area, also considers her son to be a miracle, having given birth to him when she was in her late 40s.
I thank God for my son, when I say my prayers ever night," she said.
Faith has been a recurring theme not just in Garver`s life, but her career in Hollywood. One of her earliest roles, as a child, was that of a slave-girl in the movie The Ten Commandments," in which she had two memorable scenes with Moses, played by Charlton Heston. As a teenager, she became a household name after being cast in "Family Affair," which ran on CBS from 1966-1971. In 2009, she received a prestigious Audie Award for her work on Word of Promise," an audio book version of the Old Testament, with actors Richard Dreyfuss, Marisa Tomei and Michael York. Currently, she is preparing to co-star in the Christmas movie Santa`s Dog," in which she will play a nun.
Whether portraying a religious character in a family comedy or providing the voice for Chicken Soup for the Soul," Garver finds as much inspiration as she provides in her work.
I believe strongly in the power of perseverance," she said. You always have to keep believing that something good will happen."
