My name is Ben Sedlins, and I am interested in contributing to the Student Operated Press.  I grew up in rural northern Virginia and currently I am enrolled at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.  This past fall, I was given the opportunity to study abroad in Brussels, Belgium for the semester and it has been an experience that has opened my eyes to the wider world, culturally, politically and historically.

Although I have limited experience with published journalism, writing has been an enduring love of mine, as well as a continuing theme during my studies.  Beginning as the editor of a weekly club newsletter in high school, I then worked as a contributing committee writer for the Environmental Working Group at the Presidential Classroom's Future World Leaders Summit in 2005, and I am currently a contributing writer for Dickinson College's Student Garden publication, The Dirt.  Writing for The Dirt has been particularly enjoyable for me, because it combines my love of writing with my interest in the sustainable agriculture movement.

I view the possibility of writing for the Student Operated Press as a way for me to practice my writing and editing skills in a serious environment as well as getting feedback from peers and seasoned journalists.

Feeding the World - Wanted: Agricultural Innovation. Food production will be a crucial humanitarian issue in the years to come.

Belgian Stability - As a country that is only the size of Maryland, it is true that Belgium is a surprisingly complicated system of regional and federal powers, which are distributed almost haphazardly to the two linguistic communities.
