Balinese Demonstrate Against Anti-Porn Bill

By Robert Paul Reyes

"About 1,000 Balinese dressed in traditional sarongs rallied Wednesday to protest against a controversial anti-pornography bill that critics say could hurt local cultural traditions.

The anti-smut bill aims to shield the young from pornographic material and lewd acts, but also contains provisions that could jail people for kissing in public and criminalize many forms of art or traditional culture that hinge on sensuality."

The demonstrators weren`t fighting for their right to watch "Debbie Does Dallas", hardcore pornography is frowned upon in Indonesia, the world`s most populous Muslim country.

Not that there`s anything necessarily wrong with erotica; I would vigorously fight any attempt by Republican prigs to ban pornography.

Many Balinese make a living selling nude sculptures and painting to tourists, and they don`t want their livelihood to be taken away. Religion shouldn`t impinge on cultural traditions or individual freedom.

Why is it that organized religion is always trying to squelch any activity that is fun? People shouldn`t allow Christian fundamentalists or Islamic clerics to suck out all the joy out of life.

If Christians find explicit sexual images objectionable, they should refrain from logging on to BigJugs.Com or watching Real Sex on HBO. They should be faithful to their own dogmas, and leave the rest of us the hell alone.

If I ever visit Indonesia I will be sure to buy a nude painting from one of the locals as a protest against religion gone wild.
