Miraculous escape: baby thrown out of window survives
Police are investigating a suspicious fall of a new-born baby out of a first floor window of an apartment block in the town of Domodedovo, near Moscow. Police say they suspect the mother threw the hours-old infant from the window.
On Wednesday evening 26-year-old Oksana gave birth to her first baby, a girl. She was then alone at home and nobody knows exactly what happened next. The most likely scenario suggests that Oksana threw her daughter out of the first floor window. A few minutes later a naked new-born was found there by a woman passing by.
The woman who found the baby said at first she thought a cat had fallen from a tree. When she came closer, she saw it was a baby. She was totally shocked. She wrapped the baby in a plastic bag, flagged down a car and took it to a maternity home.
Fortunately the baby was still alive, though she had been exposed to cold and had bruises over her body - but luckily no fractures.
The baby girl is now recovering while her mother is undergoing psychological examination and treatment. The infant and her mother are being kept separately and doctors say both are not well enough to face the media.
The baby’s grandmother Galina said her daughter was waiting for that baby.
“I don’t know what made her do it. Maybe she just got scared giving birth on her own in the apartment. It was her first baby. It wasn’t like she did not want a baby, she had been waiting for it,” the baby girl’s grandmother said.
The local prosecutor’s office is looking into the case. It will decide whether to file a charge of attempted murder, and whether the mother is mentally fit to stand trial. If found guilty, Oksana could face up to five years in prison.
