Iraqi police say attacks on two Baghdad pet markets Friday killed more than 50 people and wounded at least 85 others.

Authorities say a female suicide bomber killed at least 43 people and wounded 75 others in the popular al-Ghazl market in central Baghdad. Militants have targeted this market for attacks several times since the start of the Iraq war.

Separately, at least eight people were killed at a market in southern Baghdad. At least 10 others were wounded.

Meanwhile, the number of U.S. service members killed in Iraq rose in January, but is still lower than last year before the start of the U.S. troop surge.

Two separate attacks killed two U.S. soldiers Thursday, raising last month's death toll to at least 39 American soldiers. In December, officials listed 23 dead.

In other violence Thursday, rockets slammed into a British base in southern Iraq, wounding at least two British soldiers and killing a number of Iraqis outside the entry gates.

In Baghdad, a parked car bomb killed at least three people. An Iraqi police officer said passers-by were among the wounded.

Four other roadside bombings in Baghdad Thursday claimed the lives of at least seven people and wounded six others.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
