Del Toro Joins Forces With Disney to Create a Movie Based on The Haunted Mansion Ride

By Tony Graff

I couldn`t believe it when I read it either. Announced just last year at Comic Con, Guillermo Del Toro, the visionary behind Pan`s Labyrinth, the Hellboy movies, and the Orphanage, is joining forces with Disney to create a movie based on the Haunted Mansion ride.

While there is already a movie on it, which starred Eddie Murphy, Disney leaped at the chance to bring Del Toro on board for this new film. Rich Ross, the Chairman of Disney Studios, said that no one has ever had  Disney tour guide like Del Toro.

My reaction to this news was confusion. Isn`t Disney enough of a font of nightmares? I`ve heard of so many people admitting that villains like Ursula, Oogie Boogie, and the Demon from Fantasia freaked them out as a kid. TVtropes.com is full of pages about this. Remember, Walt Disney was building these cartoons at a time when the TV was a family togetherness thing. What scared the kids had to have an effect on the adults as well, and he didn`t hide that at all.

Don`t get me wrong, I`m kind of excited to see what`s going to be presented in movie theaters 2012. I remember seeing the Fawn from Pan`s Labyrinth, and the creepy thing with the eyes on his hands, and they freaked me out. I`m expecting a scary movie, but not something I`d take a little kid to see.
