The Extraordinary Performer, Kacey Jones, LIVE! At the 11th Annual Mickey Newbury Memorial Gathering
A little over a week ago, this writer let all of you readers and fans know the FANtastic news that Kacey Jones Sings Mickey Newbury had hit the #2 spot, and then went on to reach #1, on AirPlay Direct`s Top 50 Albums Chart! Well there`s even more great news!
I`ve already told all of you out there about the phenomenal performer and amazing songstress, producer, writer, and comedian that makes up the DNA of the incredible, Kacey Jones. AND, now, on June 16th, 17th, and 18th, in Gainesville, Texas (approximately an hour north of Dallas), this monumental performer will be honoring another monumental performer LIVE, at the 11th Annual Mickey Newbury Memorial Gathering.
As Kacey Jones stated to this writer: One of the most noteworthy things about this event is that people come from all over the world to attend, whose only common denominator is the love they have of Mickey Newbury`s music. Some of them barely speak English, but they all speak Newbury, proving once again that music IS the universal language.
For those of you who don`t yet know of the amazing, legendary man, Mickey Newbury, I will enlighten you all. Mr. Mickey Newbury was one of the most respected songwriters to ever walk the streets of Nashville and that is an understatement. Mickey had the fantastical power to not only write words, but create unforgettable stories and melodies that have stood the test of time; these creations made an indelible and lifelong impression in the hearts and souls of music fans across the globe.
Mickey Newbury`s contemporaries and close friends include the likes of Kris Kristofferson, (who wrote the liner notes to Kacey Jones` `Newbury` tribute album, and appeared with Kacey in a music video for this project.) Also included in Mickey`s circle of friends is Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Roger Miller, Townes Van Zant, and Guy Clark - just to name a few. In fact, Mickey Newbury`s songs have been covered by over seven-hundred and fifty artists to date. It seems that no genre, no singer, no producer, can let go of the unmistakable talent and grace that Mickey Newbury brought to the world.
From past to present, the songs of Mickey have lived on, and will continue to live on, for the next generation to enjoy. Just Dropped in to See What Condition My Condition Was In, " was an amazing song that introduced the world to a singer by the name of Kenny Rogers, (one of this writer`s absolute favorite country singers), and launched Kenny`s career into the stratosphere. This is a name that will forever be linked with words like: legend, unequaled, and, the perfect storyteller.
Another Newbury song, Sweet Memories, has already been covered by over fifty artists. From Joan Baez to Ray Charles, Newbury`s lyrics and melodies `reached` every music genre imaginable!
The music that will remain in many hearts for the rest of time is the composition that Newbury is probably most remembered for: An American Trilogy. This song was arranged (and copyrighted) by Mickey Newbury, and made popular by The King, Elvis Presley. This compilation is a medley of three 19th century songs: Dixie, a song that became the unofficial anthem of the Confederacy since the Civil War; All My Trials, which was originally a Bahamian lullaby, but well-known through folk music revivalists; and, the great, Battle Hymn of the Republic, which was the marching song of the Union Army during the Civil War. When Mickey Newbury brought these three amazing pieces together, he turned them into one single charismatic flow of beautiful music which became an absolute hit, and is still heard across the globe today! An amazing fact? Over four-hundred and sixty-five versions of Mickey`s, An American Trilogy, have been recorded by different artists.
Kacey Jones, and her unbelievably beautiful tribute album, focuses on what an incredible singer and writer Mickey Newbury was. This is a man who held a five-octave range that came together to create a beautiful, haunting voice. He recorded over twenty- five albums in his career for every label from RCA to Elektra Asylum, and others. Sadly, in the year 2002 at the age of sixty-two, Mickey passed away after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
Kacey Jones was not only a friend of Mickey Newbury`s, she is a fan, devotee, and has a huge place in her heart where Mickey resides at all times...and she often reminds people: if you like the way I sing Mickey`s songs, you ought to hear him sing them. He was my friend and my songwriting hero.
Mickey Newbury was a hero who graced many a career in this world, and there are a huge number of songwriters, singers, and performers who, without Mickey, may never have become the stars they became. After all, Mickey was the one who brought both Townes Van Zant and Guy Clark to Nashville and helped them get their start. Not very often in life are people given an offering like Mickey Newbury but, thankfully, we were. And we have also been given one more blessing in the fantastically beautiful voice of Kacey Jones.
This writer is beyond envious of the Lone Star State right this minute. Because for three nights the songs, the life - a celebration of Mickey Newbury`s perfection - will be happening in Gainesville, Texas for all to be a part of. The 11th Annual Mickey Newbury Memorial Gathering will be a gathering of fans, friends, supporters, and avid devotees from around the globe, who will be allowed to rejoice and remember a man who deserves the ultimate praise for a life well lived, and music that will live forever.

Not to mention, having the ability to listen to the amazing, Kacey Jones as she inspires, entertains, and honors a man who will always be remembered.

Just read the reviews that Kacey Jones Sings Mickey Newbury has received! The word, RAVE, cannot even begin to describe this glorious album.
The San Francisco Chronicle:
Maybe it`s a good thing Kacey Jones waited 26 years after meeting songwriter Mickey Newbury to record an album of his songs: Four years after his death, Jones, known for her comedy albums and hanging out with Garrison Keillor at Lake Wobegon, breaks your heart so many times on this exquisite disc, you have to think just a bit of her life experience adds to the genius. Country blues have never been bluer, or more eloquent, and Jones` seen-it-all voice is the perfect match for Newbury`s poignant worldview. From the ache of "Ramblin` Blues" to the infectious bounce of "San Francisco Mabel Joy," Jones honors a singular talent as only another singular talent could. - ------Dave Wiegand
I can`t hear What Will I Do without tears coming to my eyes. I`m leery of tribute albums, but this is a good one. It`s nice to see an artist who understands and appreciates the soul of Newbury`s songs honoring him like this. Thanks, Kacey. "
Have a wonderful time! I envy you ALL!
Until Next Time, Everybody!
