American Hiker Beaten Bloody in Iran by Prison Guard

By Judyth Piazza CEO (Editor)

Three American Hikers Sarah Shourd, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal were imprisoned in 2009 by Iranian authorities on the grounds of spying for the US and trespassing.

The trio was hiking along the Iraqi and Iranian border when they were seized by Iranian forces in July 2009. After numerous attempts by the State Department to get the three hikers released, Sarah Shourd was the only one released on $500,000 bail.

While in custody Josh Fattal proposed to Sarah Shourd and they are now engaged to be married once he is released.

Until now, Sarah has remained silent but after Josh and Shane did not show up for their last court appearance, Sarah felt that she needed to break her silence about their time in captivity.  Sarah stated that she was held in solitary confinement while Josh and Shane were held together. When asked if they had been physically abused, Sarah stated, "For the majority of the time we were not mistreated until one day a guard went crazy for no apparent reason.

He pushed Josh into a cell and Shane down some stairs, the guard then began slamming Josh`s head against the wall until he was covered with blood."  When asked if the physical abuse continued, Sarah stated, "We were told that it would never happen again and the guard would no longer have contact with us."

Prior to their latest scheduled court appearance, Josh and Shane were in the midst of a 17 day hunger strike.  In the last image taken of the two they were very pale and noticeably thinner. The two did not show up for their last court appearance and the only explanation given to the families was they just did not show up.

Sarah said that while in captivity she went on a hunger strike lasting for 10 days after which she could not walk across the room.  "This is why I felt that I had to speak out, I don`t see how anyone can survive 17 days on a hunger strike,"  said Sarah.

According to CNN, their mysterious absence from court and the fact their lawyer Masoud Shafii, continues to be denied access to Shane and Josh, is becoming disheartening and very troubling.
