Cancer Bill to Be Debated

Cancer Bill to Be Debated

By Sophie Akinyi

A Bill to establish the Cancer Prevention and Control Institute has been tabled in Kenyan parliament awaiting debate.

The Bill which has been written by Nyaribari Chache Member of Parliament Robert Monda comes less than a week after burial of Nobel Peace Laureate Prof.Wangari Maathai who succumbed to cancer.

This institute will be charged with prevention, cure and control of the disease. This it hopes to achieve through establishment of hospitals, care centers and provision of vocational treatment to cancer patients. Monda is looking forward to a situation where Kenyan hospitals will have national registries to monitor cancer type, frequency and areas where the disease is prevalent.

Currently, few hospitals have care units for people suffering from cancer. A lot of efforts have been shifted towards people living with HIV/AIDS. Cancer requires the same attention as the latter, as it is slowly becoming a lead killer disease. Medical Services Minister Prof.Anyang` Nyong`o( who is a cancer survivor) together with some MP`s have in the past raised concerns over limited cancer treatment machines.

The author of this bill is also the Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Health.
