Global Green USA Launches Green Schools Mobile App to Help Students, Teachers and Parents Create Healthier Classrooms and Lower Energy Bills
Global Green USA unveiled its new Green School Mobile App, powered by the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, at the 7th Annual Gorgeous and Green Gala in San Francisco before more than 200 supporters.
The App, produced in partnership with the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS), is currently available in the iTunes store by searching (ORC Mobile). The App provides a step-by-step evaluation process for students, teachers and other school stakeholders to measure classroom`s natural daylighting, temperature, indoor air quality, acoustics and energy use.
The results will educate students and provide a road map for schools to create healthier, more efficient classrooms. With Lincoln`s financial support Global Green will: deploy the App in 10 schools based in San Francisco and Los Angeles; create a 2.0 version of the mobile App that will be launched during Earth Month, in April 2012; and invest in creating new measurements to evaluate waste/recycling and water use at schools.
"We are excited to launch this smart tool for green schools with the support of Lincoln MKZ Hybrid," said Global Green President Matt Petersen. "This mobile App will help further protect, educate and inspire our most precious and important natural resource, our children." Global Green is already collaborating with the San Francisco Unified School District to help create and implement school modernization protocols and standards that will lead to the greening of schools that will cost less to operate while improving student performance. This collaboration will also influence the green investment of the recently passed $531 million dollar school modernization bond. "Global Green has been an invaluable partner for the San Francisco Unified School District in our efforts to create healthier, greener classrooms, said Nik Kaestner, SFUSD Director of Sustainability."
"We`re excited to continue our collaboration with Global Green and look forward to deploying their new school resources next year!" "Lincoln is committed to creating cars that not only meet our customers` expectations when it comes to drive, comfort, and value but also leave less of a carbon footprint and make this earth a healthier place to live," said Jim Peters, Manager, Lincoln Communications. "We are proud to continue our relationship with Global Green by supporting students in the classroom with another smart innovation: the Green Schools App.
Lincoln will help raise more than $1 million to continue these education programs and give the renewable gift of green to our youth." Studies show that student test scores can increase by up to 25% if immersed in an environment with abundant sunlight, fresh air, and an overall healthy atmosphere. In addition, helping schools lower operating costs for energy and water by between 20-40% helps focus resources on better learning materials and increased teacher salaries. "We are so pleased to take our school Operations Report Card to the next level through our partnership with Global Green USA," said Bill Orr, Executive Director, Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS). "By providing user-friendly tools that will help not only staff, but also the students within the school, to evaluate their school`s health, energy and environmental impacts, we hope to create high performance schools, and environmentally-aware students, across the US."
GREEN SCHOOL MAKEOVER COMPETITION WINNER ANNOUNCED
Global Green also announced the winner of its National Green School Makeover Competition presented by Pureology at the event. The Texas School for the Deaf based in Austin will be receiving a makeover valued at $130,000.
As a direct result of Global Green`s National Green Schools Initiative over 20,000 students who were in overcrowded and rundown schools across the U.S. now attend classes in healthy classrooms in state-of-the-art green schools. Soon, that number will triple. For the past decade, Global Green has worked with the Los Angeles Unified School District to help green its $15 billion new school construction (the largest school construction project in the country).
Now, Global Green is expanding its initiative with the goal of insuring that within a generation all students can learn in healthy, high performance classrooms. After Hurricane Katrina, Global Green opened an office in New Orleans to help spearhead the green rebuilding of the city, and thanks to a grant from the Bush Clinton Katrina Fund, is demonstrating how to sustainably rebuild New Orleans` schools.
Last year, the Lincoln MKZ hybrid was honored by Global Green USA with the product design award at the 11th Annual Global Green USA Sustainable Design Awards in New York. It is the first luxury hybrid to get 41 m.p.g. and sold at the same price as the gasoline version. The Green School Initiative is already helping tens of thousands of students and teachers throughout San Francisco, Los Angeles and across the country.
