A Kansas state lawmaker is proposing a measure to make the cairn terrier, the breed of Toto from "The Wizard of Oz," into the official state dog.
Democratic state Rep. Ed Trimmer deserves a lot of credit for acting on the idea proposed by Brenda Moore, obedience chairwoman with the South Central Kennel Club. It behooves politicians not to rely only on cronies for advice, constituents are a fountain of knowledge and wisdom.
Most states have everything from a state flower to a state seal, why shouldn`t Kansas honor man`s best friend. Many states have a state dog, The American Foxhound is the state dog of Virginia.
The state insect of Florida is the Zebra Longwing Butterfly, it`s a crying shame that Florida has a state insect, but Kansas doesn`t even have a state dog.
Toto is perhaps the most beloved pooch in the history of cinema, and the cairn terrier is the only rational option for the state dog of Kansas.
It`s high time that Kansas honored the "Wizard of Oz" and canines by naming the cairn terrier as the official state dog.
