Newly Revised Edition of 'Robert's Rules of Order' Includes 17 Key Changes

By SOP newswire

For churches using Robert`s Rules of Order as its parliamentary authority, either by a specific reference in the church bylaws or by common usage, it`s important they note several changes presented in the newly revised 11th edition released late last year. Richard Hammar reviews the 17 changes most relevant to church business meetings in the July/August edition of Church Law & Tax Report.

To ensure church board and membership meetings are conducted consistently within parliamentary authority, churches should review key changes made in the latest edition of Robert`s Rules of Order

  • Disciplinary matters
  • Small boards
  • Electronic meetings
  • Electronic communications
  • Disposal of ballots
  • Time limits to challenge, retake, or change a vote
  • "Is there any debate" rather than "are you ready for the question?"
  • "Request for information" rather than "point of information"
  • Clarification of certain member rights
  • Requirements pertaining to executive sessions
  • Motions to ratify
  • Alternating speakers
  • Dropping nominees from a ballot
  • Vacancies
  • Corrections in the minutes
  • Minutes should list the names of all makers of main motions
  • Dispensing with the reading of the minutes
