An Innocent African American, Jonathan Ferrell Is Shot 10 Times By Officer Randall Kerrick; First Degree Murder?

By John G. Kays

Did officer Randall Kerrick, 27, when shooting an unarmed African American (in Charlotte, North Carolina), 24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell 10 times with his service firearm, commit a homicide, first degree murder (on the police end of the equation)?

With a great deal of evidence in hand, much of which has been made available to the public, this is exactly what it looks like. Randall Kerrick has been charged with voluntary manslaughter, but is this good enough?

This morning I listened to the complete 911 call placed by Sarah McCartney, who was startled by a very shaken-up (he`d just been in a very bad car crash, running into a tree) Jonathan Ferrell, who in actuality was simply seeking help, probably medical assistance.

Well, and I don`t want to cast aspersions on Ms McCartney, but she somehow assumed that Mr. Ferrell was attempting to break into her home; the question whether race might play into her false assumptions, is an interesting one I`ve been mulling over (just now).

That would be unfair to Ms McCartney, but after all, when the 911 dispatcher sent these 3 officers out to her house, they must of had in mind this was a robbery in progress call, or possibly an attempted home invasion

The assumption Sarah made about Mr Ferrell, that he had criminal intent, is (in my mind) the key to an unfolding tragedy, a malicious perpetration of deadly force by a rookie police officer who was quick to utilize his gun trigger. Irrationality? Deep-seated issues with racial profiling at its core?

It can`t be proved definitely, but when you look at all the evidence (or at least what`s been made public - I haven`t viewed the police cam video yet), race looms large in the unjustified shooting death of Jonathan Ferrell.

The actual shooting itself wasn`t captured on video (apparently, Jonathan made a move, ducking outside of the camera`s purview), but weapon discharge acoustics were recorded, where no less than 12 reports are clearly heard, coming in 3 distinct clusters.

This tells me an overkill, trigger-happy junior police officer had time to think before he commenced with the three volleys, where 10 of the 12 shots met their mark in the body of targeted Mr Ferrell, who was already in a great deal of pain as a result of his unfortunate automobile accident.

This is what makes it even worse for me! News footage, showing a mangled, twisted Toyota Camry getting towed away, is another piece of the puzzle, telling us why Jonathan behaved in the way he did, just minutes after stumbling away from a nasty accident (around 2 AM Saturday, September 14th, 2013).

We hear, even his shoes were off, looking dazed and disheveled; hardly the demeanor of a cool, nonchalant burglar (or armed robber) about to ply his chosen trade. This makes me think Sarah McCartney averted her eyes when opening her door to a panicked, injured black man (he may have sustained a concussion), who only wanted some help.

Had she looked out her window, she probably would have been able to surmise the situation more keenly; she then would have noticed his desperation, not criminal intent. Instead, she locked up and morphed to a victim mode; attempts to eliminate race contributing to her distorted state of mind are failing (for me at least)!
