School Lifts Ban on Boy, 9, Wearing 'My Little Pony' Backpack

By Robert Paul Reyes

"A North Carolina woman said school officials lifted the ban on her 9-year-old son`s "My Little Pony` backpack and are introducing new anti-bullying measures.

Noreen Bruce of Asheville said she met with Buncombe County Schools administrators Thursday and they agreed to allow her son, Grayson, to resume using his `My Little Pony` backpack, which they had earlier told him not to bring to school because it triggers bullying."

For a mother to dispatch her 9-year-old son to school wearing a " My Little Pony" backpack is suspect parenting at the least, and criminal child abuse at the worst.

It would be wonderful to believe that elementary schools are a blissful paradise where diversity is celebrated, and peer pressure and conformity have been banished.

Unfortunately, a school is a microcosm of the real world and any child who is perceived as weak or weird becomes easy prey.

Schools should not tolerate bullying, and an anti-bullying message should be part of the curriculum. But a modicum of common sense should prevail, and having a boy prance around school wearing a "My Little Pony" backpack and expecting him not to get beat up is insanity.
