German Town Pays Wino Street Cleaners in Beer and Cigarettes

By Robert Paul Reyes

"A German city announced the start of a project offering beer and tobacco products to alcoholics and other addicts in exchange for cleaning city streets.

The city of Essen in North Rhine-Westphalia announced Wednesday is the first day of the "Pick Up` project, which is recruiting alcoholics and drug addicts to clean city streets in exchange for $1.58 per hour as well as free beer, tobacco and food."

I`m a realist and I`m cognizant of the fact that it`s sheer folly to attempt to train alcoholics and drug addicts to learn a useful trade like computer programming or accounting.

You don`t have to be a rocket scientist to push a broom, picking up litter is a task that winos and druggies can handle with ease, and what better motivation for them to do a good job than to pay them in beer, cigarettes and food.

This program will do wonders for the self-worth of drug addicts and alcoholics; they will be contributing to society and be rewarded with what they love the most.

This wonderful program will reduce the need for panhandling, clean up the streets and make the addicted population feel good about themselves.
