A Dog Named Kitty and a Cat Named Fido?

By Robert Paul Reyes

"Marilyn: My sister has a dog named Kitty and two cats named Fido and Rover. What do you think of giving a name to a dog that is normally a cat`s name, and giving a name to a cat that is normally a dog`s name?

cat "Gabria Kramer in Cary, North Carolina

Well, it`s a little weird, but hey "it does get your attention. Please tell her I suggest that she name her next dog Liz. Why? Because I think `Elizabeth` is way too elegant for a dog who`s going to be eating from a bowl on the floor."

Marilyn Vos Savant the Parade Magazine writer who answered this reader`s question is a diplomatic and gentle soul.

Here`s how I would have responded:

Naming a dog "Kitty" and naming cats "Fido" and "Rover" definitely gets people`s attention -- folks are now hip to the fact that your sister is nuttier than a fruitcake.

Your sister`s pets are going to be so confused they will require personal intervention from an animal whisperer.

What`s with the generic cat and dog names anyway? Cats and dogs are people, and they deserve people names like Bethany, Robert and Elizabeth.

And as far as what your sister should be called, you really don`t want to know.
